VHS ANTHONY
Tony in his new fly sheet, kindly
supplied by Ivory Collection
Weight 532 kg
We had a scare with Anthony in February and though that we may have to put him
to sleep, as he seemed to have some form of fit and then got cast. Incredibly,
he recovered almost immediately and the vet was called and we became aware that
he has a very week heart and kidneys. The vet gave him weeks rather than months,
but again he has defied the vet and is really loving life again.
He now is back to his full protein feed and is putting the muscle back on he
lost in the winter months. He still hates the rain and wind, so will often stand
in the barn for days at a time. Now with the warm spring sun and light winds
means he can stay out at night, but often will need to come in during the day
due to flies. We are all doing our best to get him through the summer months
due to his sarcoids, he will be aggravated by the flies and this causes him
great stress. His body is covered with miracle cream during the day and at night
he wears his new fly sheet, which has been kindly donated by Ivor Collection.
Tony's diet going into summer is still quite high
in protein due to the lack of rain and grass growth. During updating this the
rain is now falling in
west Wales, so we will need to monitor his weight, and down grade his feed a
little.

PAST HISTORY
This horse was once a stunning example of a proud competition horse. When the VHS were told of his condition they acted within 24 hours and Anthony came into the Centre. Standing at 16.2hh he is a shadow of his former self and his condition has been brought on through an injury to this eye. Unteated the infection spread and now as you can see, his near side of his face is disformed and sarcoids are even growing under his skin near his mouth. His rehabilitation will take months, and we hope by using a new product from Alvahorse his sarcoids will eventually die back.
However, time can only tell and this
is why we thought we should show our supporters where your money really does
go and by donating a small amount regularly, how you can help more horse like
Anthony. If you would like help the rehabilitation of Anthony, please send a
donation to Veteran Horse Welfare and mark the envelope Anthony Appeal.
For every Anthony there are another 100 waiting to come to the centre. During his first 2 weeks he has made steady progress and we hope that by constant care and rehabilitation Anthony can lead a comfortable and quiet life at the centre.
Summer 2006
Having ‘Tony’ a whole year now, nobody would imagine he has improved
so much. He is a stunning horse but still very afraid of other horses, although
he has developed a strong bond with Jane.
He is unable to regulate his own body temperature, so during very hot days we
have to keep him in the barn or large cool stable. His sarcoids are still causing
him a problem and earlier in the year we had to have one surgically removed.
Despite his dreadful condition, his weight has maintained well and his dental
work is fully complete and his feet are now beautiful.
His routine is much dependent on the
weather and he enjoys warm cloudy days rather then very hot ones. He is brought
in each morning as he sleeps in the top paddocks as they are cool and have less
flies and during the day he will go into the Barn field as the large barn is
cool and comfortable for him.
Weight: 582 kg

He is still fed twice a day, with
his supplements in his evening feed and now has a hay replacer rather than hay.
