VHS Simon

Spring 2008

Simon’s leg is much improved following his tendon injury last year, he is now able to be turned out without his support bandages on. Simon can also play in the field without giving Julie heart failure! Still best friends with Milly, they are now part of ‘the gang’ with Harry and Mel. All being slightly on the podgy side they usually are in the same fields and all get on extremely well.

Simon suffers with conjunctivitis so in windy weather he cant go on the top fields. Being Julie’s big baby he has turned soft as he is turned out in up the neck rugs at the slightest hint of bad weather!

The Christmas card designed by the yard manager, Karen, sold well this Christmas and will be available again next year.
Simon is fed on:
1 Fibergy
1⁄2 Leisure mix
Supplements
Grande flex
Grande Complete
Garlic
Echinacea

Spring 2007

Winter – Spring 2007
Weight 525 kg

Having spent a quite winter in the hay field, Simon as ever did not listen when he was called in from the field during a snow storm in February and galloped off with a few of his friends to play in the snow. This was a huge mistake and as they galloped around the large paddock, his injury from years ago took it toll on the opposite leg and his tendon suddenly gave in causing him to fall like a stone and slide along the ground. He came to the gate on 3 legs and Julianne was devastated as she thought the injury could have been so much worse when she saw him
He then reacted to a heat treatment and his skin blistered, then days after an abcess appeared on the front and back of the other tendon. All in all he had a painful few weeks but now his leg is settling and Julianne does her best to keep him slowly walking the paddocks with Milly.
Now he will be fully retired and only attending shows for his own pleasure in hand.

His weight has to be carefully watched and after several vet visits, both Julianne and the vet and keeping a close eye on both his legs.
His diet remains very high in fibre and his daily feed is 1lb of Fibregy and 1⁄2 Leisure mix. He will receive 1⁄2 a bute morning and evening for another few weeks until his leg shows full recovery from the blistering and abbcesses.
His supplements include 15 garlic building his resistance to flies during the summer, 30 ml of Sure bio after his anti biotics, Echinacea to help naturally heal his system.
Thank you for visiting Simons site and should you wish to adopt him for a family member or friend please visit our adoption site.

Summer 2006
Simon as many of horses found the spring a long aftermath of the winter and having to spend many hours in with Milly his crib biting took its toll and he had colic the same night as we lost little Penny. He recovered very quickly, as our vet was superb and reached the farm in just 20 minutes usually a 40 minute journey, luckily the roads were very clear. He will again represent the VHS at shows around Pembrokeshire, this summer.
Simon now is very occasionally ridden out as Julianne is so very busy with the Society and charity, but loves his life and now is enjoying the summer sun.
He still adores Milly and like her, he has to wear Green Guard to restrict his grazing.
Routine
Simon has a mixed routine as Milly is so unpredictable, but he comes in first at 8.00am and is fully groomed and effol is applied to his feet. If he goes out for a ride it is an hour after his feed and then spends about 30 minutes on the top yard with Julianne, keeping her company while she mucks out the top yard.
He usually has one two hour sessions out of the restriction paddock a day or will wear the Green Guard all day in a good grazing field.
He has to wear suncream all summer to protect his nose like all the pink nose horses, as the sun burns very quickly and is applied twice a day

PAST HISTORY

Julianne Aston Founder of the VHS with her own Veteran - Minty's Man of Peace aged 25

Minty's Man of Peace (Simon) is 25 and is still winning and qualifying at veteran and coloured classes.

Simon was given to Julianne and the V.H.S. in 1999. He came from a local riding school and had injuries during the period he was there; from a fall on the road to going through a trailer whilst travelling. Before the riding school brought him, he was in a ‘town’ field for 7 years. He came physiologically disturbed by his experiences of life and for the first 2 weeks was unmanageable and dangerous. With much bonding and patients he began to become trusting and eventually also bonded with Julianne’s other 3 veterans.

They both under went training and schooling and they learnt a great deal.
Simon was noticed by many, and quickly proved how Julianne and staff at the V.H.S. has turned this stunning horses life around.

In 2001 he qualified and was placed at CHAPS International Final and won various Veteran Classes and Championships and eventually won his class in the Super Solvitax Veteran of the Year.
He lives life to the full, and constantly plays games with humans – where he can get away with it he will.

Julianne gave this statement to a national magazine ‘I am very lucky to have been given such an outstanding horse. Despite his injuries he is on herbal medication and gives his utmost at shows. His first show was in 2001 and copes with many sounds and sights that even being an older horse, has never experienced before’,

Simon not showing age at 26 - thank you to Dodson and Horrell.
